Rate increase clause for freelancers

A rate increase clause for ongoing clients: how and when you can raise your rates, with notice and an exit for the client.

Rate increase clause: copy and adapt

The Provider may adjust its rates once every [12] months by giving the Client at least [30] days' written notice. The new rates apply to work performed after the notice period. Work already quoted or in progress is billed at the rates in force when it was agreed. If the Client does not accept the new rates, it may end this agreement at the end of the notice period without penalty.

When to use it

In retainers and long-running engagements. It turns a raise from an awkward negotiation into a scheduled, pre-agreed event.

Variants by trade

Indexed increase

Rates increase automatically on [1 January] each year by the percentage change in [consumer price index], with a minimum of [3]%.

Consultants

Rates are fixed for the first [6] months. Thereafter the Provider may review them with [60] days' notice.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice should I give before raising rates?

Thirty to sixty days is standard. It gives the client time to budget and makes the change feel planned, not opportunistic.

Can I raise prices in the middle of a project?

Not on work already agreed. A rate increase clause applies to new work after the notice period.
