Web designer client questionnaire

Most website projects stall waiting for content and decisions. Ask these up front and you know who writes the copy, who owns the domain, and what done looks like.

When to send it: After the discovery call, before you send the proposal.

Goals

  1. 1.What should the new site achieve that the current one does not?
  2. 2.Who is the main visitor, and what is the one action they should take?
  3. 3.How will you measure success after launch?

Scope

  1. 4.Current website URL, and what you like or hate about it.
  2. 5.List the pages you expect (home, about, services, blog, contact...).
  3. 6.Features you need: booking, shop, forms, member area, multilingual, blog?
  4. 7.Platform preference (WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Squarespace) or open to advice?
  5. 8.Three websites you like and what you like about each.

Content and access

  1. 9.Who writes the copy and supplies photos, and when will it be ready?
  2. 10.Do you have a logo, brand colours and fonts?
  3. 11.Who owns the domain and hosting today, and can you share access?
  4. 12.Will you need maintenance or updates after launch?

Budget, timing and decisions

  1. 13.What budget range have you set aside for this?
  2. 14.Is there a hard deadline, and what happens if it moves?
  3. 15.Who else needs to approve the work or the contract?
  4. 16.How would you prefer we communicate (email, calls, messaging), and how often?
  5. 17.How did you hear about me?

Send it, and get the answers back

Stop copying answers out of email threads. With Clinch the questionnaire goes out with your proposal or contract, your client fills it in from their phone, and the deposit is paid when they sign.

Questions about client questionnaires

When should a web designer send a client questionnaire?

After the discovery call, before you send the proposal.

Can I edit these questions?

Yes. Copy them, remove what does not apply and add your own. Shorter questionnaires get answered faster: keep only the questions whose answers change your price, your plan or your contract.

Should the questionnaire come before or after the contract?

Questions that affect price and scope belong before the proposal; the detailed ones (names, timelines, access) work best right after signing, when the client is committed and expects them.

How do I send it with Clinch?

Create a free Clinch account, paste the questions, and send them with your proposal or contract. Your client answers from their phone without an account, and the answers are saved on the client's record.
