E-signature legality · Middle East & Africa
Is electronic signature legal in the United Arab Emirates?
Yes. Electronic signatures and records have legal effect in the UAE, and a qualified or approved electronic signature carries a presumption of authenticity. Ordinary commercial contracts may be concluded electronically.
The law
- Federal Decree-Law No. 46 of 2021 on Electronic Transactions and Trust Services
What still needs wet ink, a notary or a qualified signature
- Personal status matters such as marriage, divorce and wills
- Title deeds and other real estate disposal documents
- Negotiable instruments
- Documents that must be notarised by a notary public
The DIFC and ADGM free zones have their own electronic-transactions laws, which also recognise e-signatures.
Where Clinch fits
Clinch is built for everyday commercial agreements — freelance and agency contracts, statements of work, NDAs, quotes and service agreements — which in the United Arab Emiratesneed no special form. Every signature is captured with the signer's explicit consent, and the signed PDF carries an audit trail (name, email, timestamp of every event, hashed IP) plus a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact document, so anyone can check it was not changed after signing.
It is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified one: for the documents listed above, use the formality the law requires.
