Subject: Update to my rates from [date] Hi [Client], Thank you for the work we've done together. I'm writing to let you know that from [date], my rate will change from $75.00 per hour to $90.00 per hour. Over the time we've worked together my skills and the results I deliver have grown, and my rates now reflect that. Everything already agreed and in progress stays at the current rate. For new work after [date], I'll send an updated agreement for us to sign. If you'd like to talk it through or plan upcoming work before the change, just reply to this email. I'm glad to keep working together. Best, [Your name]

How to raise your rates without losing clients

Give notice (30 days is the minimum, 60 is kinder for long-term clients), state the new rate and the date plainly, give one honest reason, and don't apologise. Honour work already agreed at the old rate. Then follow up with an updated agreement, so the new rate is in writing and nobody is surprised by the next invoice.

FAQ

How much notice should I give before raising my rates?

At least 30 days, and 60–90 days for retainer or long-standing clients so they can plan their budget.

How much should a freelancer raise rates?

10–20% per year is common and rarely loses clients. Bigger jumps are easier to phase in over two steps, or to apply to new clients first.

Should I explain why I'm raising my rates?

One short, honest reason is enough. Long justifications read as uncertainty and invite negotiation.

What if the client says no?

Decide in advance whether you'd keep them at the old rate for a fixed period or part ways. Often the answer is a smaller scope at the new rate.

Put the new rate in a contract.

Clinch drafts an updated agreement with AI, your client signs from their phone, and payment is requested the moment they sign.
