What every freelance invoice needs
A unique invoice number, both parties' names, the issue date and a real due date, itemised work with quantities and rates, tax if you charge it, any deposit already received, and the payment terms including late fees. The due date and the late-fee line do most of the work: an invoice without a date is a suggestion. The terms only hold if the client agreed to them before the work started, which is why the contract matters more than the invoice.

What payment terms should a freelancer use?
Net 7 or Net 14 for most freelance work. Net 30 is common with larger companies, but shorter terms and a deposit up front keep your cash flow healthy.
Can I charge a late fee on an invoice?
Yes, if the late fee was agreed in your contract. 1–2% per month is typical. Putting it on the invoice alone, without prior agreement, is much harder to enforce.
Should I subtract the deposit on the final invoice?
Yes. Show the full total, then the deposit received, then the balance due, so the client sees exactly what they already paid.
